Village Place Land History

Did you know that Village Place is built on the land that was once the Frank D. Fitzgerald Farm? Frank D. Fitzgerald was a Michigan governor, born and raised in Grand Ledge. You may also recognize the “Fitzgerald” name as the Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge was renamed after Frank. He and his wife Queena were prominent citizens of Grand Ledge. He was elected Secretary of State in 1931, and successfully ran for governor in 1934. He served a 2-year term and was defeated by Frank Murphy in 1936. In 1938, Fitzgerald ran again and won. Frank died in 1939 while still serving as governor. The farmhouse stood on the corner of Nixon Road and M-43 (Saginaw Highway), and the barn was built in 1901. Frank's wife Queena served in the community many years afterward and was president of the Grand Ledge Garden Club.
